            Liquid, solid, and gaseous hydrocarbons and their derivatives are prepared by causing CO to react with H₂ in the presence of a catalyst prepared by decomposition of compounds of metals of the 8^th group by heating to >500º, preferably >600º, but <the melting point of the compound or metal obtained and preferably in a current of H₂.  Thus, Fe hydroxide containing 5% of Al(OH)₃ is reduced in this way and used.
