CO and H₂ are obtained by the action of CH₄ or gases containing it on metal oxides capable of transformation to lower oxides, with the exclusion of oxides of metals of the Fe group.  Gives examples of the use of TiO₂ and a mixture of Cr₂O₃ and MgO.  The lower oxides are afterward oxidized to the higher oxide and used again.
