      1140.  ------.[I. G. Farbenindustrie, A. G. Alcohols]  Apparatus for Catalytic Gas Reactions, British Patent 444,898, Mar. 30, 1936.  Chem. Abs., vol. 30, 1936, p. 6245.

In apparatus for effecting exothermic catalytic gas reactions, the catalyst is arranged in a plurality of layers in a bundle of tubular reaction chambers around which the gases flow before entering the tubes, and a supplementary current of cool fresh gas is directed against the exterior of the tubes to cool the contents thereof at a point preceding that at which overheating would occur.  The tubes are preferably free from catalyst at this point.
