            Hydrocarbon of higher molecular weight than CH₄, such as a mixture of C₂H₆, C₃H₈ and C₄H₁₀, is brought into contact with a gas such as steam capable of converting C into CO, at 400º-1,000º and in the presence of a catalyst comprising an Fe-group metal or oxide, hydroxide or carbonate of such a metal distributed in set hydraulic cement.
