Fatty acids or their alkali salts are obtained from the oxidation with alkali or alkaline earth hydroxides of the higher oily fraction, which in turn is obtained in the catalytic hydrogenation of CO. The chlorination takes place in an aqueous medium. H₂O-soluble slats of S oxyacids are used as catalysts.
