Separation of Alcohols and Acids From Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Products. United States Patent 2,523,248, Sept. 19, 1950; appl. filed Feb. 19, 1948, Serial No. 9,428; 10 claims (Cl. 202-42). Chem. Abs., vol. 44, 1950, p. 11,068. Oily and aqueous fractions from the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis are mixed if they have been separated or are taken directly from the synthesis plant and charged to a fractionating tower. The mixture is fractionated to take overhead oil and H2O together with oil and H2O soluble oxygenated compounds, principally alcohols with a bottoms product made up of oily constituents, H2O, and oil-and H2O-soluble oxygenated compounds, principally organic acids. The overhead is extracted with selected alcohol solvents such as aqueous alcohol solutions. The bottoms fraction has a lower solvent power for organic acids and particularly a low solvent power for the Na salts of the acids when the bottoms oil fraction is neutralized with an alkaline solution. 12 United States patents cited.
