Gases containing 30-40% or more of olefins with the range of propylene to amylene, such as the end gases from the conversion of CO with H₂, are polymerized until only very small amounts of unsaturated hydrocarbons remain. The liquid products are then hydrogenated at 140º-150º under a pressure of 200 atm. over a Ni catalyst. The hydrogenated oil is treated with superheated steam in the presence of about 2.5% of caustic alkali. The distillate oils, after removal of the lighter fractions as gasoline and diesel oil, contain about 51% of oil suitable for insulating oil.
