To prevent afteroxidation of a quenched and exhausted hydrogenation catalyst during the time of storage, the H₂O used for quenching contains suitable catalyst poisons, such as H₂S, alkalies such as caustic soda, NH₃, alkali or alkaline earth hydroxide, SO₂, SO₃, or phenols, which react with the used catalyst substance and inactivate it against oxidation.
