H₂O or H₂O vapor is passed through a bed of coke, which is between the poles of a high-frequency generator, so that luminous discharges take place in the coke. The content of CO and H₂ can be varied by varying the frequency and voltage of the current and rate of flow of the H₂O or H₂O vapor.
