Abs., vol. 47, 1953. p. 3330. CuO, preferably on an inert support such as SiO2 or pumice stone, is reduced by H2 at 150º in tubes surrounded by H2O. N2 may first be passed over the CuO and H2 gradually admitted to replace the N2. The space around the tubes is at a predetermined pressure associated with the temperature of the reduction. Organic substances are then reduced by passing them with H2 through the tubes. Examples are: (1) With 40 tubes 2.5 m. long and 76 mm. diameter and 350 l. of pastilles of CuO or pumice stone, the intertube space is heated to 135º by passing in steam, with the pressure kept at 4 kg. per cm.2 When the CuO has been reduced, 120 l. Me2CO per hr. is passed in with 20 times the theoretical amount of H2 at 150º. The yield of iso-PrOH is theoretical, with 240 l. Me2CO per hr. the yield is 87%. (2) Similarly 90 l. MeCH : CHCHO per hr. at 160º gives 100% BuOH. (3) PrOH : CEtCHO (75 l. per hr.) at 160º gives 100% BuOH. (3) PrOH : CEtCHO (75 l. per hr.) at 160º gives a quantitative yield of BuCHEt CH2OH, with a reduced mixture of CuO activated by CeO. (4) Furfural (90 l. per hr.) at 170º gives a mixture of 2-methylfuran 40 and furfuryl alcohol 60%. (5) AcH at 65º and 187 mm pressure gives 100% EtOH. GULF OIL CORP. See abs. 436, 437, 438.
