Various aryl esters are prepared by the reaction of a phenol, CO, and an olefinic compound in the presence of a Ni or Co catalyst under pressure. Thus, when PhOH, 47.1: C₆H₆. 100: (EtCO₂)₂Ni, 10: and C₂H₄, 28 gm. are heated 25 min. in a Cu-lined pressure vessel at 292º-300º under 260-700 atm. CO distillation of the Product gives 87.3% EtCO₂Ph.
