British Patent 655,237. July 11, 1951. Chem. Abs., vol. 46, 1952. p. 7115. Process for preparing glycol (I) and glycerol and their esters by heating CO and H2 in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature >150º and a pressure of 2,000-5,000 atm. Thus, CO and H2(1:1 mol. ratio) heated in the presence of AcOH containing 0.035 gm. Co(OAc)2 per cc. at 184º-242º and 3,000 atmospheric pressure yield mainly (CH2OAc)2 and C3H5(OAc)3. The same products, together with lower boiling esters, mainly EtOAc and PrOAc, are obtained by heating a 2:1 mol. CO-H2 mixture under the same conditions 1 hr. at 225º-246º. If the above reaction is carried out in the absence of AcOH but in the presence of H2O, the reaction product is a mixture of (I) and (1) formats. Other catalysts that can be used in this procedure are Mn naphthenate. Cu-Zn chromite. Sn(OAc)2, Pb(OAc)2, ZnO2, Sb2O3, Mn chromite, and Cr carbonyl. |
