United States Patent 2,503,724, Apr. 11, 1950: appl. filed Apr. 16. 1947. Serial No. 741,867: 9 claims (Cl. 260-449.6). Chem. Abs., vol. 44, 1950, p. 7516. Products from a primary reaction zone, particularly byproduct CO2 and H2, are supplied to a secondary reaction zone together with the fresh feed synthesis gas. The reaction is controlled to give additional hydrocarbon product. Example: H2:CO::1.5:1 is passed through a primary reaction zone containing fluidized Al-Th catalyst, 20% aluminum and 80% thoria, pressure 300 atm., and temperature 805º F. The gaseous products are removed, reduced in pressure to 200 p. s. i., condensed, and separated at 70º F., with recovery of liquid product in motor gasoline boiling range. C4 fractions are recovered from this gas and the residue is passed to a secondary reaction zone containing fluidized Fe catalyst promoted with alumina and potassium oxide, pressure 200 p. s. i. and temperature 600º F. This stream is mixed with additional fresh synthesis gas, ratio 1 part synthesis gas, 2 parts tail gas from the primary zone. The gaseous products are recovered as from the primary zone. The separated gases are recycled at a rate 2 : 1 on basis of the mixed synthesis gas. Unrecycled portions are treated for recovery of C4 hydrocarbons, fractionated for removal of normal butane, and supplied directly to an alkylation system. The feed to the secondary zone, excluding recycle, is substantially free of water vapor and contains H2 : CO :: 3 : 1 and slightly under 40 mol. % CO2 on basis of total reactant content. The CO2 is largely consumed. 1 literature ref. and 10 United States patents cited. |
