Method of Manufacturing High Antiknock Synthesis Gasoline. United States Patent 2,461,153. Feb. 8, 1949: appl. filed Apr. 14, 1945. Serial No. 588,309: 8 claims (Cl. 260-450). Gives a process for obtaining high antiknock gasoline by combination of hydrocarbon synthesis, alklation, isomerization, and catalytic conversion. In the example, the hydrocarbon synthesis products are fractionated to the following % by vol.: 8 % C4 Hydrocarbons; 25% C3-C7 light naptha, 35% C8, 400º F. end point heavy naptha, 20% diesel fuel, and paraffin wax. One vol. of light naptha is contacted at 25º F. with 10 vol. 90% H2SO4 (H2O content 2%) for 2 min., 97% of the olefins are removed. The acid-loefin extract is alkylated with isobutene in a molar ratio of 5:1 of the equivalent olefin content, at 50º F., acid to hydrocarbon ratio in the reactor 1:1 contact time 20 min. Aviation alkyate of 350º F. end point, octane 84 is produced in yield 80% by vol. on basis of naptha charged or 190% by weight of equivalent olefin content converted to C4. The remaining paraffin raffinate is treated with 98% H2SO4 at 60º F. in proportion of 10 lb. acid per bbl. paraffin raffinate or zero bromine number. This is isomerized in presence of fortified AL chloride-kerosine complex having a heat of hydrolysis of 340 cal. per gm., and with 2% HCl on the weight of the raffinate, 1 vol. of mixed butanes per vol. of raffinate, temperature 235º F. 9% by weight of isobutene to the raffinate charge is produced with 88% of a 110º-297º F. gasoline isomate, octane 73. The heavy naptha is hydroformed with Mo oxide-alumina catalyst using recycle gas (70% H2) at rate of 2,300 cu. ft. per bbl. feed, temperature 975º F., pressure 200 p. s. i. space velocity 0.5. A yield of 78% by weight of naptha charge of debutanized aviation hydroformate, end point 364º F., octane 74 is obtained. The hydroformate naptha is nearly saturated with a bromine number of 8. 8% by weight of C4 hydrocarbons are produced. The C4 fraction with isobutene is alkylated, charging 99% H2SO4, 5:1 molar ratio of isobutene to butylenes, temperature 40º F., 1:1 vol. ratio of acid to hydrocarbons. The yield is 190% by weight on olefins charged of aviation alkylate, 350º F. end point, octane 92. The composite has an octane number of 80 and good lead susceptibility 4.5 cc. tetraethyl lead per gal. gives 100 octane gasoline. 11 United States patents cited. GOLDSCHMIDT, A.-G. See abs. 3303. |
