Improved Fe catalyst, which has a reduced tendency toward C formation and a shorter activation period, is obtained by sintering red Fe oxide in a reducing atmosphere and by incorporating into the catalyst before sintering about 2-10%, by weight of the Fe of powdered activated C. About 10 wt. % of an alkali-metal compound may be added as promoter.
