Synthesis gas can be obtained from high-boiling liquid hydrocarbons relatively deficient in H. The hydrocarbons are reacted at 1,600º-2,600º F. with high purity free O₂ in a regulated amount substantially below that stoichiometrically necessary to convert the hydrocarbon completely to H₂ and CO. High-boiling hydrocarbons are converted into solid carbonaceous material. The carbonaceous solids are separated and reacted in a separate succeeding step with a mixture of steam and high purity O₂ in relative proportion effective to maintain the reaction zone autogeneously at high temperature. 6 United States patents cited.
