Synthesis gas is prepared by partial combustion of hydrocarbon gas. The O₂ for combustion is divided into 2 streams, and the stream containing 60-75% of the total O₂ is mixed with the hydrocarbon gas, preheated to 1,000º-1,200º F., and led to the furnace, where it meets the minor O₂ stream preheated to 1,600º F. containing 25-40% of the total O₂ required.
