In preparing a catalyst for producing MeOH and other oxygenated organic compounds from CO and H₂, a soluble acidic Cr compound such as CrO₃ is caused to react with an excess of a ZnCO₃, and the precipitate formed is dried and heated to effect decomposition and reduction of the carbonate.
