A Ni catalyst on a metal support is used in presence of a promoter (1-5% of Ag, V, Co, Cd, or Cu), preferably at 180º-225º, the lower temperature being employed for mixtures rich in H₂. For purification the gas mixture may be passed successively over Fe, Cu, Ni, and metalized (Cu) porous C. The catalyst may be regenerated at intervals by a reverse current of N₂ or steam, or steam may be added to the gas mixture. The metal support is preferably Ni, Cr, or Al.
