      714.  FISCHER, H. G. M., AND WELTY, A. B., Jr.  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Gasification of Carbonaceous Material.  United States Patent 2,618,544, Nov. 18, 1952: appl, filed June 29, 1951, Serial No. 234,412: 7 claims (Cl. 48-266).

Temperature in a conversion zone such as a water gas generator is maintained by withdrawing a portion of the carbonaceous material form the generator, burning a portion of that withdrawn under conditions to produce the maximum amount of CO2, and recycling the heated remainder to the generation zone.  In burning to CO2, 3 times as much heat is generated than when burning to CO.  This minimizes the amount of C and air required to generate a given amount of useful heat.
