Paraffin hydrocarbons containing a plurality of C atoms in the molecule are prepared from H₂ and oxides of C by passing these gases over a suitable catalyst at a temperature lower than that at which the catalyst promotes the production of CH₄ only. The reaction may be conducted at reduced, ordinary, or slightly raised pressure. Suitable catalysts are mixtures of ZnO with Fe, or Cu with Fe, or Co with Cu; pure Ni is not suitable. Gives examples.
