By effecting reaction between oxides of C and H₂ at a temperature lower than that required for production of CH₄, with the particular catalyst employed, homologs of CH₄c such as C₂H₆ and C₃H₈, are produced. With a catalyst of ZnO and finely divided Fe, CH₄ only is obtained at 480º, but at 380º a mixture of CH₄ 80% and homologs 20% is obtained: whereas at 300º only 10% of CH₄ is formed, together with 90% of higher hydrocarbons. Simple catalysts, except Ni and others that produce only CH₄, may be also employed. Normal reduced or increased pressure may be used.
