Formates are used in presence of H₂O under pressure at temperatures >100º. Gives example for the hydrogenation of low temperature phenols, b. 250º-340º, in alkali solutions with sodium formate to neutral oils insoluble in alkali as well as of moist brown coal to oily or resinous products.
