CH₄ is heated to 1,000º-1,100º for not more than 1 sec., suitably 0.05-0.2 sec. The CH₄ may be diluted with coke gas, and ordinary or reduced pressure may be used. C₆H₆ and other aromatic hydrocarbons are formed, and the H₂ produced may be reconverted into CH₄ by reaction with CO or CO₂ in the presence of a Ni catalyst or used for hydrogenating the hydrocarbons produced or other materials.
