Gases such as water gas (which may be first freed from H₂S) are treated for the removal of 8 compounds other than H₂S by using a catalyst of precious metal such as Au or Ag, which convert the S compounds in the presence of H₂ to H₂S without causing any other change in the gas. The gas is then further treated by a usual method for removing the H₂S formed. Silverized asbestos may be used at a temperature of 200º-300º.
