Gas of relative high thermal stability is purified without altering it composition.  A mixture of CO and H2 containing about 2 vol. of H2 per 1. of CO, having an S content of 120 mg. per m.3, and a Cl content of 10 mg. per m.3 of gas, was purified by contact with a catalyst consisting of active C and KOH at 550şatmospheric pressure and a through put rate of 40 1. of gas per 1. of catalyst per hr.  The S or Cl, present in the untreated gas is an organically combined form, was found to be unaffected by treatment with NaOH.  The catalyst has a K content of 30 wt. %.  The purified gas obtained during 20 hr. of continuous operation had an average overall S content of only 2 mg. and Cl content of 1 mg. per m.3 of gas.
