Process for the synthesis of motor fuel hydrocarbons by the interaction of CO and H₂ in presence of an Fe group catalyst may be improved by separating from the synthesis products a hydrocarbon fraction b. 100º-400º F. containing oxygenated compounds produced by the reaction and passing it in the vapor phase in admixture with 5-50 wt. % of stream into contact with fuller’s earth or the like at 700º-900º F. and 15-25 p. s. i. g. for a sufficient time to substantially improve the octane value, usually to about 12 octane numbers.
