3:5:5-trimwthylhexan-l-ol is made by passing a mixture of diisobutene, CO, H₂ in presence of >.025 mol. H₂O (per mol. of diisobutene) and of a Co salt (acetate or naohthenate; 0.001-5 wt. % of dicobutene) dissolved in 1 ingredient through a 1^st reaction zone at 175º-225º and 350-2,000 atm. The 2-phase product is continuously removed, the aqueous phase separated, and the product distilled.
