Steam is passed through a column of incandescent C to form water gas, and more steam is introduced to react with part of the CO of the water gas to form CO₂ and H₂. The additional steam is regulated in such a manner that in the product there are 2 parts H₂ to 1 part CO. Describes apparatus.
