Gaseous mixture containing CO and H₂ is subjected to the action of a phosphoric acid catalyst or the like, forming MeAc, and the MeOAc may be converted into free HOAc by saponification in the presence of substantially the quantity of H₂O necessary for producing glacial HOAc.
