Mixture of H₂ and a C oxide is passed, under superatmospheric pressure and at a temperature > 200° (suitably under a pressure of about 2,600 lb. per sq. in. over a catalyst comprising an intimate mixture of Zn and Cr oxides and finely divided free Cu, the ratio of Zn to Cu being of the order of 2.0-4.5 atoms of Zn per atom of Cu.
