Powdered coal or other carbonaceous material is gasified in two reactors in series, a smaller one being a cyclone or the like, in which the exothermic combustion reactions occur at a temperature above the melting point of the slag, and a bigger one, which may contain filling material and in which chiefly the endothermic reactions are effected at a lower temperature.
