The hydrocarbons are cracked to low-boiling olefins, which are suitable for polymerizing to yield antiknock gasoline. Acid-activated bleaching earth is used as catalyst, which is saturated with a H₃BO₃-H₃PO₄ mixture or only with H₃PO₄ and is activated with Co salts or similar salts. During the cracking the hydrocarbons are kept at a partial pressure of 1/10-1/40 kg. per cm.2.
