Gaseous hydrocarbons can be converted into synthesis gas by contacting them at about 1,600º F. with and O carrier consisting essentially of a major proportion (90 wt. %) of titania mixed with a minor proportion of an oxide of Fe, Ni, Co, Mn, Cr, and W. Example: Various runs were made using TiO₂ and an addition agent composed of Fe₂O₃, 80; Cr₂O₃, 10; and NiO, 10 wt. %. When using 6 wt. % of this composite agent the CH₄ conversion was almost 80%, and the selectivity to CO was nearly 100% without C formation. When used alone TiO₂ caused only 9.6% conversion. This particular addition agent was most effective when used in amounts 3-7%. Other examples presented.
