Residual gases from the manufacture of H₂ from coke-oven gases are partly burnt by passing them with insufficient air through a gas producer filled with refractory material at a high temperature. The mixture obtained is purified to remove traces of saturated hydrocarbons by catalytic destruction in the presence of Fe, Ni, or Cr and CO₂ by washing with NH₃. The purified gases are used to produce MeOH and NH₂.
