Mixture of CO and H₂ is passed over a Ni catalyst at 300º and atmospheric pressure to remove substantially all the CO. Steam may be mixed with the gases before the reaction. A mixture of equal volumes of CO and H₂ and 15% steam is passed over a catalyst consisting of kaolin 30%. NiO 45%, sand 15%, K₂CO₃ 3%, and Na₂CO₃ 7% at the rate of 100 vol. Per hr. The resulting gas which is 66.7% of the original volume consists of CO, 0.7%:CO₂, 41%:CH₄, 31.7%: and H₂, 26.6%. If steam is added to the extent of 30% the gas obtained. 91.6% of the original volume consists of CO. 0.5%: CO₂, 29%:CH₄, 29%:and H₂, 41%.
