Mixture of CO and steam is passed over a catalyst that comprises a compound containing at least 2 substantially nonvolatile acidic elements, especially the acidic elements of groups III, IV, V, and VI of the periodic table.  Typical compounds formed from 2 of the above nonvolatile acidic elements are phosphomolybdic acid, phosphotungstic acid, phosphosilic acid, chromium vandate, vanadium molybdate and silicotungstic, and silicomolybdic acids.  The reaction is conducted at pressures of 25-900 atm. at 200º-300º.
