CO and steam are brought into contact with a H halide and a halide of an alkali or an alkaline earth metal or of Sn, Fe, Co, Ni, Bi, Mn, Pb, Te, Zn, or Cd.  The metallic halides may be used alone or admixed with one or more dissimilar metallic halides.  The reaction may be conducted at pressures over atmospheric (25-900 atm.) at 200º-300º.
