In the continuous production of a CO-H2 mixture by the passage of steam and oil separately or together through a preheated porous bed of refractory material in a generator, the steam reacts with C deposited on the bed from the passage of oil in a preparatory step and the oil is cracked so that only CO and H2 are produced.
