United States Patent 2,566,311, Sept. 4, 1951; appl. filed Sept. 26, 1947. Serial No. 776,366; 10 claims (Cl. 260-450). In the catalytic hydrogenation of C oxides at elevated temperature a reaction product is obtained, which contains a mixture or organic acids with nonacid organic compounds comprising alcohols, ketones, esters, aldehydes, or hydrocarbons. To separate such a mixture comprising a saponifiable organic acid and at least 1 unsaponifiable nonacid compound selected from the above group, it is treated with an alkali to convert the acid compound to its corresponding alkali salt. The resulting salt is then separated from the mixture by subjecting the salt solution to evaporate the liquid portion of the solution without any decomposition and to deposit the salt as a solid residue. The distillation may be carried out under a combined vapor pressure of the solution and unsaponifiable nonacid organic compound of not more than 25 mm. Hg and at a temperature 200º-400º F. Diagram. |
