In producing mixtures of CO and H2 reaction is effected between O2 and a hydrocarbon material such as CH4 with the latter present in proportions>the flame-producing range at a controlled temperature (suitably about 1,000°), and the reaction temperature is maintained by supplying heat from an external source, while the reaction products are rapidly removed and cooled as they are formed.
