The Fe-Th mixture is dissolved in H₂SO₄. K₂SO₄, is added to this solution to precipitate K₂Th(SO₄)₃. The precipitate is filtered, washed, and then boiled with a concentrated solution of Na₂CO₃; this converts Th to Th bicarbonate. The trace of K remaining in the catalyst is said to have a beneficial influence.
