Formic acid is obtained by interaction of H₂ and CO₂ at high pressures in the presence of catalytic agents and solvents. Metals of the Pt group, such as Pd black, are suitable catalysts and H₂O ether, alcohol, esters, ketones, paraffin, or liquid acids are suitable solvents.
