Mixture of Co and H2 is passed at an elevated temperature and pressure, suitably 500° and 125° atm., over a hydrogenation catalyst, suitably ZnO and reduced Cu or Cr salts but excluding Fe, and then over a dehydration catalyst or over a mixture of both catalysts; or, MeOH may be passed over a dehydration catalyst. Alumina prepared by partly dehydrating Al(OH)3 at 300°, partly dehydrated Ti hydroxide, Th hydroxide, or silica gel may be used as a dehydration catalysts. Gives various details.
