160. -----. (The Texas Co.). Hydrocarbon Synthesis. United States Patent 2,640,845, June 2, 1953; appl. filed May 1, 1947, Serial No. 745,358; 6 claims (Cl. 260-449.6) Chem. Abs. vol. 47, 1953, p. 7839.

The invention is particularly applicable to catalytic reduction of CO with H2.  Uniform contact and prevention of slugging are obtained by changing the direction of movement of the reactant stream with stationary baffles configurated to induce rotational or whirling motion.  Vertical discontinuity of the baffle is essential.  The flow of gases containing the fluid phase is repeatedly subjected to a whirling type of distribution in predetermined zones.  In between these zones the mixed phase tends to readjust itself more or less to the general upflow of reactant gas.  3 foreign and 12 United States patents cited.
