Substances such as brown-coal tar, crude paraffin, coal-or tar-hydrogenation product, and others are freed of whole or most of their oily components with, for example, nitrobenzene. Then they are oxidized with HNO₃ or with nitrous gases. The oxidation products are finished in the usual way.
