Acetals of NCCH₂CH₂CHO prepared by the reductive carbonylation of CH₂: CHCN (I) in the presence of saturated alcohols or glycols, are useful intermediates in the manufacture of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and pesticide. MeOH 120, (I) 75, tert-butylcatechil 1. reduced Co-thoria catalyst 10, H₂ 230 atm., and CO 170 atm., shaken 1 hr. at 150° and 600-900 atm., CO pressure in a Ag-lined autoclave gave 59 gm. y,y-dimethoxybutyronitrile, b₂₄ 90°-91°. (CH₂OH)₂ 110 gm gave 12 gm. 2-(2-cyanoethyl) dioxolane, b₆ 71°-75°, n ²¹/_D 1,4248. Derivatives of these compounds may be used in or as lubricating oils or as additives.
