Heat is removed from reaction chambers in which exothermic reactions are carried out and wherein the reaction temperature is materially above the boiling point of H₂O by introducing therein in direct contact with the reactants, a stream of finely divided heat absorptive solid material, the inlet temperature of which is below the reaction temperature, cooling it with a water spray, and then returning it to the reaction chamber.
