CO and H2 are passed under pressure and at an elevated temperature, suitably 100 atm. And not over 450° at any point in the reaction zone, over a Cu catalyst. To prepare the catalyst, a solution of Cu nitrate or an organic Cu salt is treated with alkali, the precipitate washed and dried in vacuo, mixed with a small proportion of violet-colored Cu. And then reduced at a temperature not exceeding 200° with H2 or CO under ordinary pressure with or without diluent gas such as N2 or CH4. The temperature of the CO and H2 supplied to form MeOH does not exceed 180° before the reaction. Auerhahn, a. See abs. 605. |
