       46.            ATKINSON, R. G. (Phillips Petroleum Co.).  Coal Gasification Process and Apparatus.  United States Patent 2,572,829, Oct 30, 1951: appl. Filed Dec. 28, 1948, Serial No. 67,735: 12 claims (Cl. 48-63).

Mixture of powdered coal, O₂ and steam is gasified by being passed from end to end through the center of a reaction chamber maintained at a temperature> 750°.  To protect the chamber walls from the intense heat radiations in the reaction zone, a gaseous suspension of powdered coal and steam is tangentially injected at high velocity over the whole inner surface of the sidewall thus preheating the coal-steam mixture which is withdrawn, mixed with O₂ and recharged into the reaction chamber for conversion into gaseous products.
